Design and Technology

Year 10 Design and Technology Exhibition
On Thursday 26 July, the two Elective Year 10 Design and Technology classes showcased their Interior Innovation Projects to students and their parents. The exhibition opened at lunchtime and again after school to parents. The exhibition was very well attended by students and parents. All were delighted with the exciting visual display.

The design brief required students to design and produce an innovative Interior Accessory. These accessories were to be made from textiles or resistant materials. Girls were asked to include a finishing process for enhanced quality.

English

Primary ICAS English Competition
During Week 3 of Term III the girls in Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 participated in the ICAS English Competition. The competition assesses reading, writing, spelling and grammar skills. In Year 3 the girls achieved 14 Credits, five Distinctions and one High Distinction; in Year 4 there were 15 Credits and 12 Distinctions; in Year 5, 17 Credits, six Distinctions and two High Distinctions were achieved; and in Year 6 the girls gained 15 Credits and seven Distinctions.

Year 3
High Distinction: Natasha Ludlow.

Distinction: Kleopatra Calfas, Maeve Hopper, Hannah Mavrakis, Georgina O'Sullivan and Ariana Wang.

Year 4
Distinction: Anastasia Baral, Ava Buchen, Stella Burgess, Grace Lam, Phoebe Masnick, Sophie Mossenson, Zoe O'Brien, Lana Oppenheim, Sylvie Stannage, Sofala Vogt, Stella Walker and Sophie Whatling.

Year 5
High Distinction: Margot Lee and Olivia Lee.

Distinction: Millicent Gerstle, Louise Godhard, Eloise Loewy, Annie Priest, Lilah Shapiro and Mia Stapleton.

Year 6
Distinction: Ruby Adler, Hannah Barter, Isobel Eagle, Ellen Kriedemann, Mia Mossenson, Sienna Schroeder and Kirsten Shields.

Secondary English International Competitions and Assessments for Schools
This year has again seen impressive results in the annual English Competition.

SCEGGS entered 390 students in Years 7-10, in the 2012 English International Competitions and Assessment for Schools – administered by The University of New South Wales. The results were excellent with four High Distinctions (top 1% of the total candidature), 61 Distinctions (top 10% of candidature) and 118 Credits (top 25% of candidature).

French

Alliance Française NSW French Challenge
Congratulations to Eloise Mack and Hannah Wade who are part of the top 20 students in NSW selected to sit the La Pérouse speaking examination at the Alliance Française of Sydney on Friday 12 October. Both students will also have the opportunity to spend the afternoon with native French-speaking teachers, immersed in the French language and culture. Félicitations les filles et bonne chance!

Geography

The Australian Geography Competition
This competition is undertaken each year by students across Australia. All students in Year 10 Mandatory Geography and Year 9 Elective Geography at SCEGGS participated in this competition. It tests a wide range of skills and general knowledge on a global basis. The girls are to be congratulated on their fine results, especially the Year 9 Elective students who undertook the same paper as the Year 10 students. Well done everyone!

Mathematics

ICAS Primary Mathematics Competition
Each year, the girls in Years 3 to 6 participate in the Mathematics Competition hosted by Educational Assessment Australia. In 2012, the competition was conducted in Week 5 of Term III.The International Competitions and Assessments for Schools Mathematics paper focuses on five strands. These are Number and Arithmetic, Algebra and Patterns, Measures and Units, Space and Geometry, and Chance and Data. In the Primary Competition, calculators are not permitted and formal algebra and formal geometry are not reviewed. The emphasis in the Algebra and Geometry strands is on patterns and spatial skills.

In the Primary School 50 girls obtained Credits, while the following girls were awarded Distinctions and High Distinctions:

Year 3

Year 4

Inter-House Science Trivia Competition
The annual Inter-House Science Trivia Competition was held on Thursday 16 August. The theme of the competition was "Energy Evolution". Each House entered two teams, each consisting of six players, one from each year from Years 7-12. After a hard-fought four rounds of trivia, the results for both teams for each House were combined to give the overall points, shown below.

Primary ICAS Science Competition
Each year, the girls in Years 4 to 6 participate in the Science Competition hosted by Educational Assessment Australia. The International Competitions and Assessments for Schools Science paper focuses on scientific skills in the subject contexts of Earth and Beyond, Natural and Processed Materials, Life and Living, and Energy and Change. The competition deals with six areas of scientific endeavour. These are:

Reasoning/Problem Solving

Gifted and Talented Discovery Program
In November last year Brittany Evat, Sophie Large, Teodora Simic and Anne Wang (Year 9) sat for the Gifted and Talented Science Discovery Program Qualifying Examination. This examination is very challenging, requiring students to draw on their knowledge of science as well as to think creatively.

I am pleased to announce that all four students achieved in the top 10% of those students across Australia, which means they have qualified to attend the Gifted and Talented Discovery program later this year.

Spelling

2012 Primary ICAS Spelling Competition
Each year, the girls in Years 4 to 6 participate in the Spelling Competition hosted by Educational Assessment Australia. In 2012, the competition was conducted in Week 9 of Term II. The International Competitions and Assessments for Schools Spelling Competition deals with four areas related to the acquisition of spelling skills. These are: Dictation, Spelling Rules and Conventions, Proofreading and Correcting. In the Primary School 36 girls obtained a Credit, while the following girls were awarded a Distinction or a High Distinction:

Year 4

Distinction: Ava Buchen, Grace Lam, Sylvie Stannage, Sofala Vogt, Stella Walker

Year 5

High Distinction: Daniella Chami, Eloise Loewy

Year 12 Body of Work 2012
Our Year 12 students from 2012 now have their artworks available for view on the school website in the 'Highlights/Students Work' section.

Year 12 Artwork
Isabellas_art_1Congratulations to Isabella Connelley (Class of 2011), who has had her Year 12 artwork purchased for the School collection. Each year the School purchases an artwork from a Year 12 student. These works are displayed in Barham going up the stairs and outside the Chapel. We select work that will capture the imagination of students providing them with something to ponder about the spirit of the time. Isabella's imaginative and evocative paintings and photographs are an exciting addition to the collection.
