NAIDOC Week

NAIDOC Week

NAIDOC Week stands as a powerful national moment and a meaningful celebration at SCEGGS – this year celebrating 50 years of honouring and elevating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander voices, culture, and resilience. This year’s theme, “The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy,” paid tribute to the achievements of the past while looking forward with pride and purpose.

The celebrations honoured the strength of Elders, the legacies they’ve passed down, and the bold vision of young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leaders shaping the future.

First Nations students Ebony Colliss and Naylise Thompson, shared powerful and moving stories about themselves as proud Wiradjuri women; Aunty Binowee joined Kindergarten to Year 2 for special yarning sessions and a bracelet making; Malyn Gordon and her dad, Tye, led a traditional dance workshop; there were weaving workshops teaching traditional weaving techniques; and smoking ceremonies, led by Tye Gordon and Uncle Brendan Kerin, which offered every student and staff member the chance to experience this powerful cultural tradition.

It was a full and fabulous week, made possible by the leadership and energy of SCEGGS Indigenous students and the Student RAP Committee. The celebrations were vibrant, inclusive and rich with culture. What a privilege for us all to celebrate together.
